About 650 new teachers will be needed by 2012 to meet the needs of school pupils with immigrant backgrounds.

The estimates by a working group at the Ministry of Education are based on projections for the increase in the number of pupils who speak a foreign language at home, as well as on the prospect of large numbers of teachers retiring, and the sizes of classes.

The calculations also assume that immigration will continue to grow at the same rate that it has in recent years.

Segregation: 55 % of the Israeli Jews wish that the Jews and Arabs are kept apart in the places of leisure.

Citizenship: 40 % of the Israeli Jews think that Israeli Arabs should be deprived of their right to vote.

Malta has urged other EU countries to take a greater share of illegal migrants – either rescued at sea or who make it to land from Africa.

It said EU policy on migrants was “a complete mess and a free for all”.

The smallest country in the EU, Malta has received at least 3,500 migrants over the past two years.

Malta was heavily criticised for its refusal last month to pick up 27 migrants who spent three days clinging to a tuna net in Libyan waters.
