BBC News: Scientists who have mapped HIV’s spread across Europe say holidaymakers infected abroad are largely to blame.

By analysing samples from 17 European countries, the international team tracked the movement of the virus around the continent.

Their map shows Greece, Portugal, Serbia and Spain are big HIV exporters, with many tourists to and migrants from these countries leaving with the virus.

The Sydney Morning Herald: Dozens of cars have been smashed and 14 people injured in riots by Muslim immigrants angered at the alleged defacement of a Koran by a Greek policeman.

Police on Friday fired tear gas and stun grenades at hundreds of protesters outside parliament and elsewhere in the Athens city centre. The government said 46 protesters were arrested and 75 cars were damaged.

Chanting “God is great!” and waving leather-bound copies of Islam’s holy book, about 1,500 Muslim immigrants - mostly young men - marched to parliament in the centre of Athens to express their anger. The clashes occurred after the protest had dwindled to about 300 people.

Telegraph: By Bruno Waterfield in Brussels Nick Griffin, the leader of the British National Party, is poised to become a key figure in the creation of a new far-right group in the European Parliament.

Fears are growing he will be at the centre of a wave of victories in next month’s elections that would give nationalist parties a firm foothold in Europe.

Searchlight, the international anti-fascist magazine, has suggested they could pass the threshold of 25 MEPs from seven countries necessary to form a European Parliament grouping entitled to public funding worth up to £1 million per year.

Over the last year, Mr Griffin has strengthened links to extremist European groups to prepare the way for a far-right surge at euro elections next month.

That belief was shaken when I talked to two people in Salisbury cathedral after Sunday morning worship. We were having a pleasant conversation about the state of the nation and they suddenly mentioned that they’d be voting BNP. My jaw dropped.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – The Italian lower house on Wednesday (13 May) approved legislation which criminalises irregular immigration, sets up citizen anti-crime ‘patrols’ and sentences landlords to up to three years of prison if they rent to undocumented migrants.

The legislation, which still has to be approved by the Senate, makes entering or staying in Italy without permission a crime punishable by a fine of €5,000 to €10,000.

A provision to triple the time irregular immigrants can be detained in holding centres also forms part of the security package, approved by 316 votes for to 238.

Wisconsin police can attach GPS to cars in order to controll movements of everybody, even of people who are not suspects, without any search warrants.

The use of GPS tracking is being justified as a tool in investigating criminal behavior and an effective means of protecting public safety.

Early supplies of H1N1 vaccine to go into production immediately, before WHO decides if virus is pandemic.

The government today signed contracts to secure up to 90m doses of swine flu vaccine by December.

It said the pharmaceutical companies GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Baxter will start producing the H1N1 vaccine almost immediately without waiting to discover whether the World Health Organisation declares that the swine flu outbreak has reached pandemic proportions.

May 13 (Bloomberg) — The World Health Organization is investigating a claim by an Australian researcher that the swine flu virus circling the globe may have been created as a result of human error.

Adrian Gibbs, 75, who collaborated on research that led to the development of Roche Holding AG’s Tamiflu drug, said in an interview that he intends to publish a report suggesting the new strain may have accidentally evolved in eggs scientists use to grow viruses and drugmakers use to make vaccines. Gibbs said he came to his conclusion as part of an effort to trace the virus’s origins by analyzing its genetic blueprint.

Concerned that the U.S. was on the verge of a devastating epidemic, President Gerald Ford ordered a nationwide vaccination program at a cost of $135 million (some $500 million in today’s money). Within weeks, reports surfaced of people developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing nerve disease that can be caused by the vaccine. By April, more than 30 people had died of the condition. Facing protests, federal officials abruptly canceled the program on Dec. 16. The epidemic failed to materialize.
