German police have carried out a series of raids targeting homes and cultural associations believed to be used to spread extremist material.

The raids, which took place in several areas, including Bonn and Berlin, were linked to nine suspected Islamists.

The nine men, aged between 25 and 47, are believed to have tried to recruit militants to fight abroad.

A total of 130 police took part in the swoop, confiscating material from 16 premises, including a publishing house.

A website that a Dutch right-wing politician was planning to use to release a film expected to be fiercely critical of Islam has been suspended.

The US hosting service, Network Solutions, said it was investigating complaints that it may have breached guidelines on hate language.

Dutch politician Geert Wilders says the 15-minute film describes Islam as “the enemy of freedom”.

According the the Dutch newspaper “De Telegraaf”, Morocan writer Mohammed Jabri will start a new comity whose task will be to monitor everyone who makes derogatory comments about Islam.

Jabri claims he has the support of lawyers, mosk leaders and writers. He is planning to sue everyone who does “racist” comments about Islam. He is aware that he may lose sometimes but he hopes to win some of the cases. He hopes that this way the Jurisprudence will evolve to make it more difficult for anti immigration politicians like Geert wildiers to express themselves freely.

The cha-chick of a shell entering a shotgun’s chamber rattled through the 911 line just before Joe Horn stepped out his front door.

Horn, 61, had phoned police when he saw two men break into his neighbor’s suburban Houston home through a window in broad daylight. Now they were getting away with a bag of loot.

“Don’t go outside the house,” the 911 operator pleaded. “You’re going to get yourself shot if you go outside that house with a gun. I don’t care what you think.”

“You want to make a bet?” Horn answered. “I’m going to kill them.”

He did.

Admirers, including several of his neighbors, say Horn is a hero for killing the burglars, protecting his neighborhood and sending a message to would-be criminals. Critics call him a loose cannon. His attorney says Horn just feared for his life.

Prosecuting Horn could prove difficult in Texas, where few people sympathize with criminals and many have an almost religious belief in the right to self-defense. The case could test the state’s self-defense laws, which allow people to use deadly force in certain situations to protect themselves, their property and their neighbors’ property.

Horn was home in Pasadena, about 15 miles southeast of Houston, on Nov. 14 when he heard glass breaking, said his attorney, Tom Lambright. He looked out the window and saw 38-year-old Miguel Antonio DeJesus and 30-year-old Diego Ortiz using a crowbar to break out the rest of the glass.

A 14-YEAR-OLD New Zealand girl has had her eyeballs gouged by relatives who thought she was possessed by the devil.

The girl was the cousin of Janet Moses, a 22-year-old mother of two who died on October 12 during the same ceremony to lift a Maori makutu (curse), the Dominion Post newspaper reported today.

Relatives gouged her eyes because they believed they saw the devil in them, and poured water down her throat.

They finally took the teenager who was close to death to the Hutt Hospital, near Wellington, where she needed emergency treatment to save her sight.

She was dead for about nine hours before police were called and a homicide investigation is ongoing, with police seeking help from Maori experts.

ALMOST a third of those diagnosed with HIV in Ireland last year were African - with the majority of victims now identified as non-nationals.

According to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre 2007 Report of the 337 people diagnosed with HIV, almost a third of cases came from African nations, making them the second largest group after Irish sufferers. The third largest were people from EU countries.

According to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, the foreign nationals affected did not acquire HIV in Ireland, but appear to have arrived here already infected. The report said: “A total of 337 HIV infections newly diagnosed during 2006 were reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. This compares to 318 diagnosed cases in 2005 and represents a 6 per cent increase.

“Of the 283 cases where the geographic origin (nationality) was known, 125 were born in Ireland and 109 were born in Sub-Saharan Africa. Data on the geographic origin is not available for 54 cases.”

AN 11-year-old boy forced two pre-school-aged girls to have sex with him, infected them with sexually transmitted diseases, but will not be prosecuted by Western Australian authorities.

Police yesterday confirmed that criminal charges would not be laid against the boy from Balgo, a troubled indigenous community in the northeastern reaches of the Great Sandy Desert 100km from the Northern Territory border, despite his being above the age of criminal responsibility under state law.

Although the incident is part of a continuing investigation, senior police have decided to treat the issue as a health matter, not a criminal one.

Amid a fierce debate about minarets, public services in canton Zurich are being tested to determine if they discriminate against Muslims.

The cantonal authorities commissioned the fact-finding study to provide a more solid foundation for an ongoing political debate on how Muslims practise their religion in Zurich.

The Zurich chapter of the rightwing Swiss People’s Party put forward a motion last August calling for a ban on the construction of “provocative” minaret towers on Muslim centres of worship.

This was followed by a similar national initiative earlier this year that was condemned by several government ministers.

Dr Thomas Widmer from Zurich University’s Institute of Political Sciences has been given the task of assessing the suitability of the canton’s health, education, penal and social services for the Muslim population.

The current investigation examined rates and predictors of deviance in a sample of Swiss youth. Data were collected from 3,136 youth; 800 cases were identified as first-generation (35%) or second-generation (65%) immigrant youth. We found that second-generation immigrant male youth were more deviant than Swiss adolescents, second-generation immigrant male youth were also more deviant than first-generation immigrants. Few important differences were found on measures of self-control and measures of perceived sanctions (get caught, shame/guilt, loss of respect) by immigrant status, and the predictive model employed explained between 23% and 51% of the variance in total deviance. Implications for crime and deviance in Switzerland are discussed.

A group of Green Bay community leaders says the city lacks diversity, and they’re on a mission to change that. A new committee’s goal is to create more culture in Green Bay.

According to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asians combined make up 20 percent of Green Bay’s population. This new group, the Diversity Committee, wants to increase that number and is determined to make it happen.
